With beautiful beaches, clear blue sea and great surf, Gran Canaria is an ideal holiday destination. For the keen surfers, or those looking for a new hobby, head to Maspalomas (near Playa del Ingles) or Playa de las Canteras (north of Las Palmas) to ride some waves.
The capital of Gran Canaria is Las Palmas, a city which combines a rich history with a buzzing nightlife. You have the choice of walking round the city and absorbing the architecture and culture, or taking the open top bus tour. These buses are distinctive in yellow and offer daily trips. Look out for the old wooden houses with balconies decorated with Canarian flowers, the prominent statue of Christopher Columbus, and get a feel for the architectural style that defines this city.
If you get the opportunity, take the walk up to the top of the Santa Ana Cathedral and enjoy the panoramic views of the city. The city’s museums are a treat for the architectural purist. The Museo de Colon and Museo Canario are notable examples. Museo Canario depicts the fascinating history of Gran Canaria up to the conquest in 1478 and is the place to go if you wish to learn some local facts. The Museo Elder de la Ciencia y la Tecnologia is the island’s equivalent of London’s Science Museum and has a much more modern feel.
The city’s nightlife is jumping and varied, but we advise you keep to the well lit main streets.

If you take the opportunity to head south, make it to Playa del Ingles at the southern tip of Gran Canaria. Close by are the Dunes of Maspalomas. From here you can take a peaceful stroll from the lighthouse at El Faro along the sandy beach through to Playa de Ingles. The walk takes a couple of hours and should build up your appetite for lunch at one of the seafront restaurants. Alternatively, buses run frequently between Maspalomas and Playa del Ingles.
Looking for a family day out? There are numerous theme parks within easy reach to keep the whole family entertained. Cool down at one of a choice of water parks with slides and pools, cheer on Cowboys or Indians at one of the themed parks or take in an exotic parrot show. You won’t be short of fun things to do, that’s a given.
If your hotel is in Playa del Ingles, there is a good chance you will be treated to some evening entertainment. If you buy a drink you won’t be charged an entrance fee and the shows on offer change daily. A list of shows will be available to browse at the hotel. The Yumbo Centrum is a hub of entertainment, a large shopping centre by day transforms into a disco complex by night.
Towards the south west of Gran Canaria lies Puerto de Mogan. This is a quaint and peaceful fishing village with fabulous seafood restaurants and little souvenir shops. The fish on the menu will be so fresh it was probably caught that morning. You can take a boat trip out to sea and keep your eyes peeled for dolphins and whales. You can head to Puerto de Mogan using the frequent and reasonably priced public transport.
With the variety of activities on offer, Gran Canaria is a superb holiday destination for anybody and everybody.
