Airport Transfers in Slovakia

There are limited flights to Slovakia from some countries, so if the flight times are ok for you, you could arrive at Bratislava airport, or Vienna (Austria) airport. But whichever airport you arrive at, all book your personal transport before you leave the UK. If you arrive in Vienna, public transport will take you over 1 hours to get to Bratislava, plus waiting time for the bus to arrive, and ensuring that you’re far enough forward in the queue to get on the next bus. can alleviate all that stress for you. If you arrive at Bratislava airport, you will need euro coins to buy your bus ticket at the vending machine before getting on the bus. The bus drivers don’t sell tickets and the machines don’t accept notes. If you join the taxi queue, when it’s your turn to jump into the cab, even if you’ve agreed a price for the fare, don’t expect the driver to stick to it. The only way you can avoid the hassle of a bus journey or an argument with a taxi driver is by booking private taxis or minibuses. All the costs are agreed with you and paid for before you leave the UK. Don’t get your holiday off to a bad start – arrange your transport in advance.

Taxis are expensive in Bratislava, so once you’ve found your bearings, you can travel by public transport. Tourist and exchange offices also sell bus tickets, and they will change euro notes. The safest places to exchange money into Euros are at the banks. You won’t necessarily get the best rate, but you won’t come away with forged notes, or counterfeit Slovakian currency.

The best time to visit Slovakia is late spring or early autumn – December and January are very cold, and July can be very hot!

If you like skiing or snowboarding, the Tatra Mountains are the place to get sporty. Ideal for both beginners and the more experienced, less crowded and cheaper than Switzerland and France, but not quite as classy.

Bratislava is situated on the River Danube and is on the border of both Austria and Hungary. Take a trip on the hydrofoil to Vienna for a day trip.

Bratislava Castle has wonder views over the Danube and the capital. Inside the castle are paintings, weaponry, antique clocks and furnishings. Pass an hour or two in the grounds, which have been restored to their former glory. St Elizabeth’s Church, also known as the Blue Church, is beautiful both inside and out. Even if it’s not open, the exterior is a sight to behold. Blue mosaics, facade and glazed roof.

In the main square in Bratislava, stalls sell local delicacies, there are plenty of cafes and restaurants in which to have a snack or a drink and watch the world go by.

The fairy tale Bojnice Castle is situated about 160km from the capital. It is free to enter, beautifully maintained, tapestries, drawings and paintings hang from the walls, antique furniture is strategically placed in the rooms, sculptures and other artefacts galore. Magical from the outside and beautiful on the inside.

Aquapark Tatralandia is a large water complex near Liptovsky Mikulas. Open all year round, could be chilly in winter and crowded in summer. Nice day out for the kids. Not too far away are the Slovak caves. An ice kingdom with an all year round temperature of -1 to -3 C, it’s best to take some warm clothing with you when you visit. A pleasant walk through the forest will get you to the caves. Arrive early when the tour groups are smaller and you can take some wonderful photos.

The Spissy Hrad (Spis Castle) located near Levoca (hop on a local bus from there to Spissy Nova), a medieval ruin, which has, in some places been restored. There’s a little museum, chapel, cafe and shop. However, the best things are the views. Bit of a climb (wear some sensible shoes), but well worth it.
